Curriculum Vitae

My professional practice consists of multiple levels of social engagement, including art production, writing and curating, commissioning, political involvement, teaching and community activism.

I began commissioning works by media artists when I helped found United Media Arts Studies in 1985. I was later the editor for four editions of Diderot, in which many of these commissioned works were published. Most recently I worked with four well-known experimental film and video makers to produce visual works to accompany four songs performed by my musical ensemble, Gigi Minor.

I have regularly curated and written about other artists’ works, most recently for the Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film. My programs there have included Rhythm and Rhyme (2003), Darlene Naponse (2003), The Determined Image (2004), Frail (2005), Scenarios From Africa: Dealing with HIV/AIDS (2005).

I have organized numerous critical art dialogues including: the Artists.Television.Symposium (1984), Les Lieux de Video (1993), and the Jerk & Jounce Symposium at OCAD (2004). I have helped build a relationship between OCAD and Bravo!FACT, facilitating funding, production and broadcasting opportunities for our students. Our first two applications have been submitted and are awaiting approval.

As an elected municipal councillor I recently addressed the Community Arts Ontario Conference on Municipal Support for Culture. I also serve on the regional Accessibility Advisory Committee, the Chamber of Commerce, the BIA and the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority.

I am currently doing research with the Mobile Digital Commons Network, a collaboration between artists, designers and technologists at OCAD, Concordia and the Banff Centre. I am leading a team that is creating collaborative music experiences enabled through cell phones and other wireless devices. We will be presenting interim results at the CCA Annual Conference in June, 2006.
